Visible Watermarks: Not Every Model Plays by the Same Rules

Veo 3 and Veo 3.1 bake in a SynthID mark, period - you'll see it in the corner or along an edge, and it's baked into the product itself, so every regular subscriber's output has it. Sora 2's watermark is pretty visible too, and between the copyright drama and the likeness controversies that never seem to end, OpenAI plays it conservative here - commercial output is explicitly restricted.

Compare that to something like Seedance 2.5, a domestic (Chinese) model that currently doesn't force a visible watermark on you at all. That's part of why a lot of creators reach for it first when a client needs a 「clean」 final cut - nothing kills a client handoff faster than an unremovable badge sitting in the corner of every frame.

Real-world tip: if you're delivering to a client or publishing commercially, run a test image or test clip before you commit to an order and check the watermark rules with your own eyes. Don't trust the vague wording on the marketing page - the rules can differ between subscription tiers, the API, and the web app, even for the same model.

Invisible Watermarks: What Is SynthID, and Can It Actually Be Detected

Visible watermarks are easy enough to wrap your head around, but the more interesting conversation is invisible ones. The one everybody's been talking about the past couple years is Google DeepMind's SynthID - it encodes watermark data into subtle perturbations in pixels or audio, invisible to the naked eye, but readable by a matching detection tool that can tell you whether a clip was AI-generated.

The whole idea behind SynthID is basically stamping generated content with a 「digital fingerprint」, aimed at the authenticity problem that comes with AI content flooding everywhere - say a news outlet wants to confirm whether a video is AI-made, in theory they run it through the detector. Right now this mechanism is mostly locked into Google's own ecosystem; whether other vendors adopt something similar, and whether detection tools ever get opened up publicly, varies a lot by company. Not every platform's output can be checked with the same tool.

Here's the reality check though: invisible watermarks aren't exactly 「bulletproof proof」 right now. Whether the watermark data survives transcoding, compression, or a re-edit is still an open question industry-wide, so don't lose sleep over it - it's mostly a technical gesture platforms make to deal with regulatory pressure, not a guarantee your content will get traced back to you. Commercial Licensing: Subscription, API, and Free Tier Are Three Different Contracts

This is where people trip up the most - a lot of folks just assume 「I paid for the generation, so obviously I can use it however I want」, but subscriptions, API billing, and free-tier credits are three separate deals, and commercial rights are usually spelled out differently for each.

Subscriptions generally gate rights by tier - the cheap tier is often personal/non-commercial only, and you need to bump up to a higher tier to get commercial rights. Sora 2, for instance, has no public API right now, so you're stuck going through a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription, which already caps your production workflow, and you still need to check the commercial terms separately. API billing tends to be cleaner - most vendors default to commercial rights following whoever's making the call, but there are exceptions: requests involving real people's likenesses, celebrity images, or copyrighted characters can get excluded from commercial licensing even when you're going through the API.

Free-tier credits are the part people forget about the most - a lot of platforms' daily free generation quota defaults to 「personal, non-commercial use only」 in the fine print. Slapping a video generated on your free quota straight onto a business account or handing it to a client is, technically, a ToS violation. Even if the platform never comes after you for it, the risk is real, not theoretical.

Good habit to build: before you kick off a project, screenshot the commercial-use section of whatever model's Terms of Use you're relying on and keep it on file. Don't wait until there's a delivery dispute to go dig it up.

Platform Labeling Rules: Should This Post Get an AI Tag Before It Goes Live

Beyond watermarks on the generation side, labeling requirements on the publishing side have been tightening fast the last couple years. Pretty much every major content platform is moving toward mandatory AI-content labeling, and the logic is basically the same as ad disclosure - users have a right to know.

The practical thing to keep in mind: the labeling obligation usually falls on the publisher, not the model vendor. So even if the model you used has zero visible watermark, once you post to a platform with a mandatory labeling policy, you still have to tag it. Between platform-side detection and user reports, there are plenty of cases now of people getting hit with penalties (reach throttling, even bans) for skipping the label.

Different platforms have different labeling entry points and trigger conditions - some make you check a box on publish, some auto-tag after detecting it. Worth checking your target platform's creator center for the latest policy before you post; this stuff changes often enough that what worked six months ago might not apply anymore.

The safer play: even when a platform doesn't require it, if the content obviously reads as AI-generated (surreal scenes, that unmistakable AI look), just add an 「AI-generated」 note voluntarily. Long-term it's good for your account's credibility, and the cost of getting caught skipping it is way higher than the cost of just saying so upfront.

Remixes and Source Material: Can You Generate With Someone Else's Character, Someone Else's Face

Once multi-character interaction and Cameo-style guest appearances took off, the copyright and likeness-rights boundary issues came along for the ride.

Sora 2's Cameo feature lets real people guest-star in generations, but it's built on an actual consent mechanism - the person appearing has to authorize their own likeness for use, it's not a case of grabbing any random photo and generating 「this person doing whatever in a video」. Using an unauthorized photo of a real person, especially a public figure, for generation carries real likeness-rights risk, and moderation has been tightening in that direction too - which is exactly why the platform itself has acknowledged that review standards keep shifting and controversy keeps popping up.

Copyrighted characters and IP are the same kind of minefield - taking a well-known anime or movie character's design and running a 「remix」 video, even purely for fun, isn't rare to see get a copyright claim once it goes commercial or picks up real traction. The copyright status of training data itself is also still an unresolved question at the industry-consensus level, and different vendors have different stances and risk exposure on it. What creators can actually control is avoiding direct recreation of recognizable protected designs - original designs are still the safest path, full stop.

Simple gut-check: if this same piece were shot as traditional photography or drawn as illustration, would you feel comfortable publishing it commercially? If yes, AI-generated is probably fine too. If no, generating it with a different AI tool doesn't change the answer.
